Earls Barton Rally Background
Back in 1992 two brothers Steven and Robert Hollowell of Cogenoe, decided to offer their extensive collection of mainly agricultural items to a local museum.
Included in the collection are equipment relating to Carpentry, Wheelwrighting and Coopering. Also in the collection are a Blacksmith's shop, early radios, laundry equipment, the contents of a dairy, horse-drawn waggons, phonographs, magic lanterns and other memorabilia from bygone days. Also another family member Phillip Hollowell, also from, Cogenhoe, has an intensive collection of early mechonised farming tools and implements, including rare model of tractors imported from America before the Second World War.
Finding that there was not any such museum in Northamptonshire they, along with some friends, formed a Charitable Trust known as Northamptonshire Museum Limited. Their idea was to build their own Museum of Rural Northamptonshire Life. One idea for raising money was to hold a Steam Rally. After a lot of thought and by talking to other local Rally Organisers they decided on the August Bank Holiday as an ideal time to hold it. The Weekend before was a Rally in Lincolnshire and the Wednesday after the Bank Holiday was the start of the large Rally in Dorset. Exibiters from Lincoln could then have a stopover on their way to Dorset. The first Rally in 1993 was held in the park of Little Houghton House on the outskirts of Northampton.
The rally was a success and in 1994 they held their first rally at Ecton Park a few miles away. A further two rallys were held in the next three years at Ecton. Unfortunately the Rally of 1997 was a washout and the original Organiser Steven Hollowell decided to cancell any further rallies and disolved the rally committee. However within a few days Michael Higham of Earls Barton invited members of the Ecton Park Rally Committee to a meeting and the Earls Barton Rally Committe was formed. A site was found at Mick White's nursery on the outskirts of Earls Barton close to the junction of the A45 Northampton to Wellingborough dual carriageway. the first Rally and Country Fayre was held over the Bank Holiday in August 1998. Further information can be found by contacting Michael Higham on 01604 811633 or E-Mail
